Mexican Chainfern (Woodwardia semicordata)
Mexican Chainfern (Woodwardia semicordata)
New item, extended description and pictures coming soon!
Widespread throughout Central America and Mexico, suspected hybrid betweenW. martinezii and W. spinulosa, and both sterile and fertile forms of this hybrid have been found; none are proliferous and they do not bear bulbils like other Woodwardia species. First described by John Mickel in 1988. As with other Woodwardia, new fronds emerge reddish and fade through mahogany and ochre colors as they mature to light or dark green. This particular Woodwardia has proven more cold tolerant than W. unigemata, W. orientalis and even our Pacific Northwest Native W. fimbriata and easily overwintered in our minimally heated greenhouses without defoliating or going dormant!
Frond Condition: Evergreen to Decidous, depending on conditions
Mature Size: 5’ long fronds horizontally arching to downward cascading
Orighin: Mexico and Central America
Requirements: Part Sun to Part Shade, Evenly Moist to Lightly Moist, prefers a slope with humidity
USDA Zones: 8, 9, 10
